Blazers @ Meatballs Ch 2
Game 1: Kershaw @ Samardzija
A 5th inning Hannigan single plates Calhoun for a 1-0 Meatball lead.
Mississippi goes up 3-0 in the 6th on a Castellanos HR.
A Tulo HR in the 7th pulls New Milford to within 2 runs, 3-1.
Top 8, Jepson on the bump and with one out Carpenter goes yard to pull NM within one. One out later, Choo ties it.
Bottom 10, with one out, O’Day comes on and with 2 outs, Calhoun creams a ball to right to give Mississippi the walk off 4-3 win.
WP Kimbrel (3-0)
LP O’Day (1-2)
Game 2: Tanaka @ Nelson
Blazers go up 3-0 in the first on a WP, Dietrich RBI single and Lowrie RBI double.
Bottom 1, Calhoun HR’s in his second consecutive AB to make it a 3-1 game.
Bottom 6, a VMart sac fly and Rasmus RBI double tie the game.
Bottom 8, Rasmus doubles scoring Calhoun, but VMart is gunned at home. 4-3 Meatballs.
Top 9, Kimbral on for the save and Castro ties the game with a longball.
Top 13, Lowrie hit a sac fly to CF for a Blazer 5-4 lead.
Bottom 13, Cano doubles to tie the game. With Iwakuma on the bump, New Milford elects to IBB Rasmus and his EX power to go after Peralta. With 2 outs, Peralta naturally kills a ball to left well over the wall giving Mississippi it’s second straight walk off win, 8-5.
WP Lowe (1-1)
LP Iwakuma (7-2)
Game 3: Anderson @ Gallardo
1-1 in the third when Castillanos HR’s for a 2-1 Mississippi lead.
A Hicks single and Cano double in the 4th make it 4-1 Mississippi
A 5th inning Choo double pull the Blazers to 4-2.
A Peralta 2 out singe in the bottom half push the Meatball lead to 5-2.
Bottom 6, Babe Calhoun singles to make it 6-2 Mississippi.
Bottom 8, Thompson on to face 2 lefties and they both single. Castellanos singles for a 7-2 lead and a groundout makes it 8-2.
Blazers get 2 on with no outs in the 9th, bringing the tying run on triple deck, but that’s as close as the Blazers come in a Meatballs 8-2 win.
WP Gallardo (4-3)
LP Anderson (6-3)
Game 4: Quintana @ Colome
A Castro first inning RBI single is matched by a Babe Calhoun HR to tie the game (against a lefty, no less)
Bottom 3, a Cano double gives Mississippi a 2-1 lead.
Bottom 5, an error leads to 3 unearned runs on a Cano 3 run bomb to push the Mississippi lead to 5-1. (with a 22 MPH wind blowing in from left and a lefty on the bump for NM, it is only natural that scrub lefties hit HR’s off of an extreme groundballer like Anderson to right. )
Bottom 8, VMart singles for a 6- 1 Meatballs lead.
Top 9, with 2 outs Choo HR’s to make it 6-2, but that is all for NM as Mississippi gets the birthday gift with a sweep of New Milford
WP Lowe (2-1)
LP Quintana (5-2)
New Milford rested Robinson, Johnson, and Tulo this series and taking 3 starters out of the series obviously hurt the chances at a win. Mississippi dominated NM, and the first 2 games were only close on late game theatrics that went for naught. This series could have been much worse but Mississippi ran into 7 outs with 2 CS and 5 OF assists (4 by Betts, 1 by Peralta)
New Milford finishes Chapter 2 the same as chapter 1 at 20-8. With a 12 game lead in the division we can afford to put it into cruise control as going .500 the rest of the way will put us at 92 wins. Ending the chapter like this is obviously disappointing, but 20 win chapters are not all that common and we have 2 this year so far.
