The New Milford Blazers had a busy chapter 2 with a few faces changing on the big club and in the minors.
Who’s here? RP Jake McGee, IF Brendan Ryan, C Trevor Brown, SP Tyler Wilson, CF Drew Stubbs, and 3B Garin Cecchini.
Who’s gone? Aaron Thompson, Amir Garrett, Andy Ibanez, Keon Broxton, Tyler Collins and Christhian Adames.
For the big club, the Blazers add a true back of the bullpen arm in lefty Jake McGee replacing the ineffective Aaron Thompson. Brendan Ryan was added to help with MI PA’s vs lefties replacing Tyler Collins. Collins gets the boot after flipping the bird to fans who booed him after misplaying a ball in CF.
On the farm, the Blazers re-aquire rehabbing Drew Stubbs to play CF in AAA with rehabbing Daniel Nava and Michael Saunders and also re-aquire Garin Cecchini to play 3B for the Illuminati. “We feel a veteran presence is necessary in Hartford in the OF right now,” explains GM Anthony Peburn. “We know Nava and Stubbs and they are comfortable playing for us to try to make the club next year.”
Needing a bigger battery presence, New Milford acquired power hitting C Trevor Brown, who will bat 7th and P Tyler Wilson, who is known for his groundball tendencies. “We feel 1/3 of our Hartford club can contribute in 2017, which is pretty good,” said Peburn. “We feel the future talent we got this chapter is equal to the talent we traded away.”
The New Milford Blazers followed up a successful 20-8 chapter one with an identical 20-8 chapter two, taking a 9 game lead in the McGowan division.
Hitter of the Chapter was again Shin Soo Choo who hit 9 HR and drove in 27 runs while scoring 29 with a 368/430/675 line. He leads the BDBL with 57 RBI and leads the OL in RBI by 17. Matt Carpenter led the team with 10 HR and his 1.026 OPS is second in the league to Choo’s 1.059. The team as a whole hit 292/353/491 with 168 runs scored and 40 HR.
Clayton Kershaw was Pitcher of the Chapter with a 4-0 mark with a 2.76 ERA and 47K in 42 innings. He has yet to go on a Kershawnian run this year. Blake Treinen went 3-0 in 10 IP with a 0.00 ERA and Iwakuma (4 wins) Anderson (3 wins) and Quintana (3 wins) accounted for most of the Blazer wins. The team pitched to a 3.29 ERA.
Chapter 2 in 2016 will forever be known for the incredible run of 16 straight wins from the end of chapter one with 4 straight sweeps.
New Milford (AP)
New Milford GM Anthony Peburn announced today that the Blazers have traded prized prospect 2B Andy Ibanez to the Mississippi Meatballs. “We have had some conversations this chapter with various teams,” stated Peburn. “Some of the talks were arbitrage type deals, and some were to help us this year.”
New Milford adds left handed set up man Jake McGee and lefty prospect Sam Selman at a steep cost of prospects Andy Ibanez, and SP Amir Garrett with bullpen arm Aaron Thompson. “Thompson has cost us at least three games by not doing his job,” fumed Peburn. “We have always been intrigued by Jake and we are happy to add him to the late innings. He will slot in nicely in front of KRod giving us another nasty late inning stopper for the playoffs. We feel our pitching is set with what we have. We may add another bat at some point. We wish Bart luck with his new prospects as they will surely make an impact in a year or two.”
Blazers @ Meatballs Ch 2
Game 1: Kershaw @ Samardzija
A 5th inning Hannigan single plates Calhoun for a 1-0 Meatball lead.
Mississippi goes up 3-0 in the 6th on a Castellanos HR.
A Tulo HR in the 7th pulls New Milford to within 2 runs, 3-1.
Top 8, Jepson on the bump and with one out Carpenter goes yard to pull NM within one. One out later, Choo ties it.
Bottom 10, with one out, O’Day comes on and with 2 outs, Calhoun creams a ball to right to give Mississippi the walk off 4-3 win.
WP Kimbrel (3-0)
LP O’Day (1-2)
Game 2: Tanaka @ Nelson
Blazers go up 3-0 in the first on a WP, Dietrich RBI single and Lowrie RBI double.
Bottom 1, Calhoun HR’s in his second consecutive AB to make it a 3-1 game.
Bottom 6, a VMart sac fly and Rasmus RBI double tie the game.
Bottom 8, Rasmus doubles scoring Calhoun, but VMart is gunned at home. 4-3 Meatballs.
Top 9, Kimbral on for the save and Castro ties the game with a longball.
Top 13, Lowrie hit a sac fly to CF for a Blazer 5-4 lead.
Bottom 13, Cano doubles to tie the game. With Iwakuma on the bump, New Milford elects to IBB Rasmus and his EX power to go after Peralta. With 2 outs, Peralta naturally kills a ball to left well over the wall giving Mississippi it’s second straight walk off win, 8-5.
WP Lowe (1-1)
LP Iwakuma (7-2)
Game 3: Anderson @ Gallardo
1-1 in the third when Castillanos HR’s for a 2-1 Mississippi lead.
A Hicks single and Cano double in the 4th make it 4-1 Mississippi
A 5th inning Choo double pull the Blazers to 4-2.
A Peralta 2 out singe in the bottom half push the Meatball lead to 5-2.
Bottom 6, Babe Calhoun singles to make it 6-2 Mississippi.
Bottom 8, Thompson on to face 2 lefties and they both single. Castellanos singles for a 7-2 lead and a groundout makes it 8-2.
Blazers get 2 on with no outs in the 9th, bringing the tying run on triple deck, but that’s as close as the Blazers come in a Meatballs 8-2 win.

LP Anderson (6-3)
Game 4: Quintana @ Colome
A Castro first inning RBI single is matched by a Babe Calhoun HR to tie the game (against a lefty, no less)
Bottom 3, a Cano double gives Mississippi a 2-1 lead.
Bottom 5, an error leads to 3 unearned runs on a Cano 3 run bomb to push the Mississippi lead to 5-1. (with a 22 MPH wind blowing in from left and a lefty on the bump for NM, it is only natural that scrub lefties hit HR’s off of an extreme groundballer like Anderson to right. )
Bottom 8, VMart singles for a 6- 1 Meatballs lead.
Top 9, with 2 outs Choo HR’s to make it 6-2, but that is all for NM as Mississippi gets the birthday gift with a sweep of New Milford
WP Lowe (2-1)
LP Quintana (5-2)
New Milford rested Robinson, Johnson, and Tulo this series and taking 3 starters out of the series obviously hurt the chances at a win. Mississippi dominated NM, and the first 2 games were only close on late game theatrics that went for naught. This series could have been much worse but Mississippi ran into 7 outs with 2 CS and 5 OF assists (4 by Betts, 1 by Peralta)
New Milford finishes Chapter 2 the same as chapter 1 at 20-8. With a 12 game lead in the division we can afford to put it into cruise control as going .500 the rest of the way will put us at 92 wins. Ending the chapter like this is obviously disappointing, but 20 win chapters are not all that common and we have 2 this year so far.

Betts walks and Johnson draws a PH walk to load the bases, putting the tying run on second. Tulo doubles to tie the game. With an 0-2 count, Lowrie pops one foul the third baseman Frazier drops. Again with an 0-2 count, Lowrie grounds a ball to second that Altuve dives for but can’t quite reach giving the Blazers a miracle come from behind 7-6 win.
WP Treinen (3-0)
LP Araujo (1-2)
Blazers sweep Granite State and go to 20-4 on the chapter sweeping 5 of the last 7 series. We realize we seem to have a golden horseshoe sticking out of our asses right now but are enjoying the ride. I can’t imagine how Ryan felt losing that last game. That was brutal. He was in every game and came away with 0 wins. Watching 3 walk offs must me a nightmare.

WP Tanaka (5-0)
LP McHugh (2-3)
S KRod (11)
Game 3: Iwakuma @ Ross
